  4. This is the distribution for DVIWIN 2.7 which is a DVI driver for previewing
  5. and printing DVI files under MS-Windows 3.1. The following steps will help
  6. you install the program as quickly as possible. Users of dviwin 2.0 or dviwin
  7. 2.5 should only follow the upgrading steps; first time users should skip this
  8. part and follow the initial installation procedure.

  10. Upgrading from dviwin 2.5
  11. -------------------------

  13.   1. Copy the files "dviwin.exe", "dviwin.hlp", "wbr.exe", "wbr.hlp",
  14.      "clipmeta.exe" and "miscwin.dll" over the old files.
  15.  
  16.   2. Read or print the documentation files "whats.new", "dviwin.wri"
  17.      and "helpme.wri". There are quite a few changes in this version,
  18.      so please read these files.

  21. Upgrading from dviwin 2.0
  22. -------------------------

  24.   1. Copy the files "dviwin.exe", "dviwin.hlp", "wbr.exe", "wbr.hlp",
  25.      "clipmeta.exe", "miscwin.dll" and "ctl3d.dll" over the old files
  26.      (remember that "ctl3d.dll" should go to the windows system directory).
  27.  
  28.   2. Read or print the documentation files "whats.new", "dviwin.wri"
  29.      and "helpme.wri". There are quite a few changes in this version,
  30.      so please read these files.
  31.  
  32.   3. Go to the Options submenu and add the suffix \$r to your font
  33.      directory. Otherwise, the program will NOT be able to find any
  34.      PK fonts.
  35.  
  36.   4. Make sure that you have a statement "FILES=50" (or more) in your
  37.      config.sys file.
  38.  
  39.   5. If you use a font substitution file, change it according to the
  40.      new method (uses dpi instead of TeX magnifications). The new
  41.      file should be called "dviwin.sub" instead of "texfonts.sub";
  42.      there is a sample substitution file in this release.

  45. Initial installation
  46. --------------------

  48.   1. Copy "ctl3d.dll" to your windows system directory (eg., c:\windows\system)
  49.      If you use windows 3.0, copy also the file "commdlg.dll" to the
  50.      same directory.

  52.   2. Copy "dviwin.exe", "dviwin.hlp", "clipmeta.exe", "wbr.exe", "wbr.hlp"
  53.      and "miscwin.dll" in any directory specified in your PATH environment
  54.      variable.
  55.  
  56.   3. Make sure that you have a statement "FILES=50" (or more) in your
  57.      config.sys file.
  58.  
  59.   4. Make new entries in one of your Program Manager groups for the three
  60.      programs (dviwin.exe, wbr.exe, clipmeta.exe).
  61.  
  62.   5. Read or print the documentation files "dviwin.wri", "wbr.wri",
  63.      "clipmeta.wri" and "helpme.wri" using the Microsoft Write program.
  64.  
  65.   6. You will also need a collection of PK font files in various
  66.      resolutions; many such files can be found in the SIMTEL archives
  67.      or any of its mirrors. In general, you want to get at least printer
  68.      fonts, and optionally screen fonts. as well as for your printer
  69.      Most screen fonts are in the files "dvivga2.zip" through "dvivga8.zip"
  70.      in the directory pd1:<msdos.tex> of simtel. When you get these files,
  71.      arrange them as following:

  73.      a. Make a "base" directory (eg., c:\tex\pkfonts)
  74.      b. Make a subdirectory under the base directory for each resolution.
  75.         The name of each subdirectory should simply be the resolution.
  76.         For example, you can make the subdirectories "c:\tex\pkfonts\300",
  77.         "c:\tex\pkfonts\329", "c:\tex\pkfonts\360" for the 300 dpi, 329
  78.         dpi and 360 dpi resolutions respectively.
  79.      c. Put your PK font files in the correct subdirectories according
  80.         to their resolution.

  82.   7. The first time that you run "dviwin.exe", go to the "Font Directory"
  83.      entry in the "Options" submenu and specify the base directory for
  84.      your fonts followed by \$r. In the above example, the font directory
  85.      entry should be "c:\tex\pkfonts\$r". If this step is not done, you will
  86.      see NOTHING.

  88.   8. Using a resolution between 100 and 145 dpi, open and see the file
  89.      "demo.dvi". This was produced from the file "demo.tex" and it reads
  90.      the graphics file "demo.wmf". As you will see, it is very easy to
  91.      combine text and graphics using this driver. You can also print the
  92.      file by issuing the "Print" command from the "File" submenu.
